AT&T COLR Bill AB 2797 (Mc Kinnor) CWA D9 Oppose

Today the California Public Utilities Commission has voted to deny AT&T their applications to discontinue copper-wire landline service  as Carrier of Last Resort. However, AT&T could still be relieved of its COLR obligations in some cases if a state bill, Assembly Bill 2797 (McKinnor) passes. The bill was recently amended to include language absolving carriers of their responsibilities inside census blocks where they lack basic exchange telephone carriers, places without population or in urban areas containing two or more alternative landline providers by providing a letter to the CPUC informing them that they no longer want to be COLR in census blocks. There will be no oversight or public participation per AB 2797. This legislation is in direct retaliation of the CPUC ruling to reject AT&T's application to be absolved of Carrier of Last Resort. AB 2797 (McKinnor) will be heard in the Senate Energy and Utilities Committee on July 2, 2024.

As members of CWA Local 9588 we urge you to call your local legislator on the Senate Energy and Utilities Committee and ask them to Vote No on AB 2797, when it comes before them on July 2, 2024.

We will Keep you informed of any further Mobilization efforts around the committee hearing on July 2, 2024, for AB 2797 (McKinnor).
